They just care so much about you
Noch im Schlauch zwischen Flugzeug und Flughafen Zürich wurden die Pässe kontrolliert. Es handle sich um eine zwar nicht stets, aber doch übliche Form der Routinekontrolle, hatte die Stewardess gleich nach der Landung durch den Bordfunk bekanntgegeben. Übrigens schenkt Niki jetzt keinen Gratiswein mehr zum trockenen Hühnersandwich aus, reicht allerdings nach wie vor Mousse au chocolat.
Ich habe den Passkontrolleur gefragt, ob sie das jetzt öfter machen würden, so Kontrollen gleich bei Flugzeugverlassen. Naja, doch regelmäßig, ja. Und warum? – “Weil es vorkommt, dass Passagiere ihre Pässe im Flugzeug vergessen, und dann wissen wir nicht, woher sie kommen.”
Er sah mich an, ich sah ihn an, ich sagte “aha” und ging lakonisch weiter, nicht wissend, ob er bemerkt hatte, dass ich mir sicher war, dass er mich verarschte. Hätte lieber gesagt “das können Sie meiner Großmutter erzählen, damit sie vor lauter Lachen im Grab rotiert und wieder lebendig wird”, dachte dann aber an meine Großmutter und fand es doch besser, wenn sie ihr Ruhen in Frieden fortsetzte.

By the way, last year I saw a good feature film set in the world of DVD and CD pirates in Beijing. And how's Shanghai these days? Still big and Chinese?

Shanghai is now China's Monaco, complete with a F-1 race track and other playgrounds for the terminally rich. Despite US Hollywood and WTO pressure DVD piracy continues. One American friend is in prison for running a pirate sales website, but the street/shop sales continue. Last night bought 28 (!) DVDs for 63 RMB including Ludwig II, Down By Law, Draughtman's Contract, King of Comedy, and more. Seems the shop was having a sale to get rid of all it's "old" movies.
One of the interesting aspects of the film I mentioned before was the way it played with film tastes. The vendors knew exactly what their regulars wanted - French cinema for this one, Kieslowski for that one, and so on. A woman street-vendor walked just past people on the street and threw names of films and directors at them, guessing their tastes just by looking at them - this one looks like Kieslowski, that one like exploding cars. The latest Big Name, reedition of That Classic, director's cut of The Unjustifiedly Unknown. Very funny to watch. A mixture of cultural guesswork and drug-dealer habitus.

Yeah, they do that here too. It is an embarrassment of riches here. Great selection of all the anti-Bush documentaries, Fahrenheit 9-11, etc.
