Krating Daeng

I hadn’t known Red Bull allegedly originates in Krating Daeng, a decades-old Thai energy drink. Mr. Mateschitz is believed to have adapted it in 1984; the Thai company TC Pharmaceuticals then held 51% of the newly founded Red Bull GmbH. The taurine content of Krating Daeng is much higher than that of its equally red-bull-anointed younger sibling.
The bottle, and the whole idea, reminds me of the batteries of so-called “genki drinks” (i.e drinks that liven you up) sold in Japanese drugstores.

An investigation of the pan-Asian development of energy drinks (in the 1970s? early 1980s? Boom-times?) and its spread to Europe and such is both timely and necesssary.
