The Odd Couple (1968)
is one of my all-time favourite films. Unsurpassed. Unsurpassable. Influential.
I hold this film responsible for the fact that most of my friendships at some point reach the Waldorf & Statler balcony stage – grumpy, yet charming; warm-hearted, yet cold-tongued; in the world, yet looking at it from a somewhat elevated (did I say elevated?) perspective.
so are we at that stage yet, my dear friend? can I call you “Waldorf”? – only if you keep your distance from the Sake-bottle, sock! ... DISTANCE, I said! – and what about me then? Am I “Statler” or what? – no, foot, if you keep going like this you’ll end up as pigs in space at best.
Some metaphors just don’t work in a multi-character environment.
