a modern myth in emergence?
A while ago I quoted from an interview with Slavoj Zizek. Zizek pointed out that multicultural tolerance was hypocritical. He said he’d ask his friends who demanded respect for Buddhism whether they would also condone Buddhist customs such as widow-burning.
Yesterday someone mentioned the same example to me – Buddhists burning widows. She had heard it in a seminar on intercultural learning.
Rest assured, people, that widow-burning was never a Buddhist custom. It was practised by Hindus in India.
You are right, people, this doesn’t diminish the main argument. However, people, it does undermine the credibility of those who use it, in an area in which they claim to have at least some expertise.
