those fascinating figures

Increasing fascination with figures like Yoshida Shôin (1839-1859) or the Tibetan Gedun Choephel (1903-1951): learned and knowledgeable people, steeped in a certain tradition, who for some reason strive to go beyond its boundaries, to learn more. Some succeed, some fail. Some go beyond literally and travel to the West, to England, the USA, or India. Some come back and come to the realization that things back home must change. Usually, such figures are way ahead of their times – in retrospect – and their lives move towards tragedy in some way or another. Fascinating, I must say.
