poking wittgenstein

On April 26, 1889, Ludwig Wittgenstein was born in Vienna. On the evening of Friday, October 25, 1946, Ludwig Wittgenstein is said to have attacked Dr Karl Popper with a red-hot poker, subsequent to the latter’s lecture entitled “Are There Philosophical Problems?”, held in room number 3, staircase H, in King’s College, Cambridge, at a gathering of the Cambridge Moral Science Club. David Edmonds and John Eidinow, two BBC journalists, have written a book about this particular incident: “Wittgenstein’s Poker. The story of a ten-minute argument between two great philosophers.” [No good English reviews of it online, none of the recently published German translation either. Where are link targets when you need them most.]
In addition to meticulously reconstructing, or rather trying to reconstruct, from vastly divergent accounts of eye-witnesses what actually happened on that magical eve in Cambridge, Edmonds and Eidinow take the liberty to view this incident as an in many ways telling occurrence: a symbolical confrontation between two vastly different outlooks on philosophy, a political confrontation between two Austrian emigrés whose attitudes towards political practice as well as theory differed greatly none the least because of their divergent socialization, and, for the same reason, a social confrontation between an ambivalent aristocrat and a self-confident bourgeois. And all this shortly after the end of WWII. And of course there’s a mysterious Third Man lurking in the background. [At least this is the picture you can get from the first 90 pages. Maybe things will change on page 156. Will inform if the case. Hereby promised.]
And now for something slightly, but only slightly, different:
Herbert Hrachovec, reflecting on unexpected gains and undesired side-effects of using Wittgenstein for teaching philosophy. Must sweep corners occasionally.
