Villagers in some parts of Himachal Pradesh, a region in Northern India, are currently engaged in frantic toilet building activities, instigated by a campaign of the state rural development department: construction of inside lavatories is now heavily subsidized, in regions where people are generally used to squatting outside. “For once the habit of aping your neighbors has yielded dividend and the toilet construction fever has caught on in the majority of the households here,” informs Harnam Chauhan, a farmer from Pharog village, according to this source.
